The Canadian Bar Association introduced Law Day in 1983 to commemorate the signing of the Charter on April 17, 1982. While Law Day this year is officially April 17th, there are several events taking place in the next month to celebrate the occasion. We will highlight each event over the next few weeks, starting with the 2016 Law Day Luncheon: Legal Services and Access to Justice, presented by the Honourable Mr. Justice Thomas Albert Cromwell of the Supreme Court of Canada. This presentation will discuss how ensuring appropriate access to legal services is a key component of access to justice. Justice Cromwell will offer some reflections on the current state of access to legal services, the role of the profession in improving it and sketch some promising ideas that could provide better service to more people.
