For the Legal Sourcery Holiday Gift Guide this year, instead of looking for some generic lists on the Internet, the library staff decided to get personal. We will share with you some of our favourite gift ideas for this holiday season. We hope it will help get your creative juices and your spirit of generosity flowing.
For the self-starter: Everyone knows someone who at some point said “I really like to learn [fill in the blank] but I don’t have time.” Craftsy has hundreds of online classes on cooking, baking, knitting, sewing, quilting, metalsmithing, woodworking, furniture making, jewelry making, gardening, drawing, painting, photography, etc. The cost of each class is between $30 and $50. There is no subscription fee. You pay for the class(es) you want and you can watch the videos as many times as you want on your computer or on your tablets. You can even stream the classes to your big TV if you have the appropriate gadget. The Android and iOS apps are very well done. You can take notes while watching the video and go back to that exact location in the video to review. You can also submit questions to the instructor and upload your projects for critique. Check out what they have to offer and gift your friend or family member an online class.
For your Inner Child… or, your child: If you are getting all grumpy over Christmas shopping and thinking bad thoughts of vandalizing shopping malls, DNA Play can provide you with hours of escape into the world of goofy monsters in cheerful colours. DNA Play is a game designed for kids (6-8) to learn DNA. But who’s to say your creative inner child won’t enjoy this just as much. You create a monster and then move the blocks of the DNA string around to alter the appearance of the head, eyes, body, arms and legs. There are over 200 billion unique combinations (according to the app developer). If you create one kooky monster a day, it will take you… 547 million years to exhaust the possibilities. The app is available for Android and iOS and costs $3.49.
This wraps up our Holiday Gift Guide for 2015. Remember holiday shopping doesn’t need to be stressful. We hope you have a wonderful holiday filled with friends, family and good times.
