The Law Society Library is pleased to present a half-day legal research session designed for new lawyers and individuals wanting to brush up on the basics. The session will provide legal research instruction from experienced law librarians and hands-on learning activities involving both print and online resources.

Wednesday, June 10, 2015
Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Saskatoon
1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
(Registration 12:30 p.m.)
Thursday, June 11, 2015
Saskatchewan Polytechnic, Regina
1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
(Registration 12:30 p.m.)

The first part of the afternoon is dedicated to providing you with the basics of legal research, whether you have limited experience or need a refresher. This lecture provides information on the Law Society of Saskatchewan Library’s resources and key secondary sources, as well as an overview of case law and Saskatchewan legislative research.

During the second part of the afternoon, participants will be divided into two groups for two concurrent hands-on sessions:

Session 1 – Exploration of Secondary Sources

Working through several scenarios, participants will gain greater comfort with secondary sources by learning how to properly use them. How do you use footnotes, case tables, and indexes to conduct research more quickly and efficiently? How do you cross-reference from the Canadian Encyclopedic Digest (CED) to the Canadian Abridgment?

Session 2 – Online Research Skills

In a computer lab setting, participants will be lead through several in-depth online search demonstrations of CanLII, and the Saskatchewan Cases and Bills Databases. By ‘learning by doing’, you will gain valuable online research skills such as proper keyword searching.
