CanLII has announced a new partnership, and has added yet another piece to its case-law searching capability. In a pilot project, Maritime Law Book, publisher of the National Reporter System, is offering CanLII users access to its headnotes, and to its Key Number System, which will make it easier to find topically-related cases.
To try out this new function, pull up a case in CanLII, and look for a blue-shaded “Show headnotes” link with a drop-down menu. The menu displays a light-blue shaded link to case summaries in CanLII Connects, and a beige-shaded box with links to the MLB Key Number System and headnotes.
Clicking on “MLB Headnotes for this decision” brings you straight to the National Reporter System, where you can link to the case and headnote. Below that, there is a list of topics with their key numbers, click on the topic to get access to all of the cases with that topic designation. From there you can refine your search in the NRS.
Once again, access to free online legal resources just got a little bit better.
